Course Strands

The course consists of three interrelated course strands plus QTS.   The course strands are designed to intellectually challenge and engage trainees in pedagogic theory and practice and develop creative, innovative and reflective practitioners.

Strand 1: Mentored Practice in Schools

Structured mentoring is at the heart of the CTG model of initial teacher training. The role of subject mentor is multi-faceted: coach, role model, trainer, critical friend, reflective practitioner, counsellor, assessor, target setter, encourager and supporter. Each trainee has a subject mentor in their base school who is responsible for supporting the development of the Q Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

For more information regarding the Q standards please visit: www.tda.gov.uk/trainee-teacher/qts-standards.aspx

Strand 2 : General Professional Studies

The format includes workshops, seminars, practice sessions, learning through case studies, and lectures. Trainee’s active participation and collaboration are encouraged. The lecture format is used mainly where guest speakers offer particular areas of expertise. These sessions provide an induction into the major dimensions of the education debate and foster a whole-school/whole curriculum perspective on the role of the teacher.  These take place in Challney High School for Boys and Community College on Monday mornings.

Strand 3 : Subject Application and Assessment

Twilight sessions held in various schools in the partnership, systematically working through the delivery of the subject specialism. This strand is coordinated by a Subject Co-ordinator and sessions are led by expert practitioners. The format includes workshops, seminars, practice sessions, learning through case studies, occasional lectures, tutorials, seminars, and practical work, for example in a laboratory, in the field, workshop or studio. The course examines the knowledge, language, concepts and skills of the subject and approaches to teaching these.

QTS : Qualified Teacher Status

To achieve QTS Standards you are required to pass skills tests in numeracy, literacy and ICT.  The tests are computerised and can be taken at any of approximately 150 test centres throughout the UK.

YOU MUST ALSO HAVE PASSED ALL OF THE QTS SKILLS TESTS TO BE AWARDED QTS.
