SAA sessions are held after school (4.30-6pm) on one or two days per week depending on the subject (e.g. Art is held on Tuesday each week throughout the training year whereas PE is on Tuesday and Thursday).  The course strand is co-ordinated by a Subject Co-ordinator and sessions are led by expert practitioners.  The format includes workshops, seminars, practice sessions, learning through case studies, occasional lectures, tutorials, seminars and practicial work.  For example in a laboratory, in the field, workshop or studio.  The course examines the knowledge, language, concepts and skills of the subject and approaches to teaching these.
Trainees learn how to:
  • plan interesting and motivating lessons
  • assess pupil learning
  • communicate their subject knowledge
  • use ICT to enhance the teaching of the specialist subject
