GPS

General Professional Studies

These sessions form part of the CTG PgCE course and are held on Monday mornings at Challney High School for Boys and Community College.  Sessions are led by CTG staff and a variety of other educational experts.  Trainee's active participation and collaboration are encouraged.

The GPS is particularly concerned with:
  • inducting trainees into the major dimensions of the educational debate;
  • enabling trainees to describe and rationally justify their professional practice;
  • basing their growing professional judgement on a disciplined understanding of the wider context of education;
  • fostering a whole-school/whole curriculum perspective on the role of the teacher;
  • enabling trainees to locate their work as subject teachers within the context of both the National Curriculum as a whole and their contractual obligations as members of the broader staff team;
  • enabling trainees to achieve an understanding of the principles underlying curriculum development and how these apply to syllabus development and the construction of lesson plans and schemes of work;
  • enabling trainees to become effective members of pastoral teams;
  • providing opportunities to prepare for and reflect upon specific practical experiences provided during the course.
